What Patrick Dorgu Brings to Manchester United

There is no denying the fact, Manchester United have badly needed a natural left-footed option at left wing-back this season. Longterm injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia has left United short in the left fullback position, but could new signing Patrick Dorgu be the answer?

The young Danish defender’s speed, dribbling ability, and attacking drive will undoubtedly help improve the left hand side of Amorim’s team. At 6ft 1” he is among the tallest defenders at the club, and his ability to progress the ball is a rare trait in the squad. Outside of Martinez (and Shaw) United lack elite progressors out of defence. Dorgu’s effectiveness in take-ons and his tendency to win fouls set him apart, ranking him highly among defenders in both Serie A and the Premier League.

Despite his potential, Dorgu remains a work in progress. While he can operate on either flank, having netted all three of his league goals this season from the right, his technical consistency needs improvement. His take-on success rate is relatively low, and his eagerness to challenge for the ball can leave him exposed defensively. His positioning and decision-making require refinement, but his speed allows him to recover quickly, and his passing and crossing ability show promise.

One of his strongest attributes is his fitness, having only missed one match due to injury since establishing himself in Lecce’s first team. This reliability is significant for United, given their recent struggles with injuries in the left-back position.

Though his €30 million transfer fee seems high for a player with limited experience at the top level, United view him as a long-term investment rather than an immediate solution. He has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with an option for an extra year, giving the club time to develop him while securing his best years.

Dorgu has been a regular for Lecce this season, featuring in various roles across both flanks. While his team has struggled, his adaptability stands out, and he is expected to slot in at left-back, a position where United have lacked reliable options due to injuries. His physicality also strengthens the squad.
Despite only 20 years old, Amorim will be hoping he can hit the ground running & instantly improve this struggling team. His versatility will help but one player doesn’t fix United’s problems. Ultimately his long-term success will determine his true value.
