Manchester United’s Cost of Sacking Managers

Manchester United’s Cost of Sacking Managers

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Manchester United has paid a staggering £75.2 million in compensation to managers they have sacked. Here’s a breakdown of the compensation paid to the key managers in this period:

1. David Moyes: £5.2 million after being dismissed in April 2014, less than a year into his six-year contract.

2. Louis van Gaal: £8.4 million in May 2016 following his FA Cup victory but underwhelming league performances.

3. Jose Mourinho: £19.6 million in December 2018, the largest payout, after tensions within the squad and inconsistent results.

4. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: £10 million in November 2021 after a string of poor performances.

5. Ralf Rangnick: £15 million in 2022 despite only serving as an interim manager.

If Erik ten Hag’s reported compensation of £17 million is included, the total cost of managerial dismissals rises even further, underlining the club’s costly attempts to regain its dominance in the Premier League.
